EXHIBITIONS – NEWS

EXTENDED TO JUNE 8TH !

Steve Brudniak: Ontological Catastrophe
Selected work from the 21st century
A rare Houston solo exhibit. At Reeves Art+Design Gallery, 2415 Taft St. Houston TX. May 10 – June 8 2024. Opening reception May 10th 6pm – 9pm. Alcohol will be served.  June 8th – All day closing reception with the artist, book signing, and 2PM dialog with UTA professor, artist and curator Benito Huerta with light refreshments. Here’s a little bit about the exhibit:

This century brought reality into question for many. There is a weirdness invasion looming on the horizon. These pieces aim to share glimpses of what we are not aware of through ordinary channels: realms influenced by dreams, therapy, psychedelics, science, mysticism, spirituality, and ontology. Some take years to complete. They are multimedia assemblages, enhanced with phenomenal elements: ultraviolet and laser light, natural fiber optics, electronic sensors and reactors, sacrament oils, microscopic and pressurized systems, light obliteration, even a sample of world oldest known rock. Such novelties assist in skirting the edge of five senses, to flirt with unique perceptions. May they escort us through a seemingly catastrophic ontology to find insight into the oncoming weirdness.

The Art of Found Objects: Enigma Variations
The Art Museum of Southeast Texas
This exhibition focuses on artists currently (or formerly) working in Texas that all create art with found materials. Artists Steve Brudniak (Austin), Marilyn Lanfear (San Antonio), Angelica Paez (Houston), Ward Sanders (Lytle) and Kelly Sears (Boulder, Colorado) will be featured as the focus of the exhibition and will each have numerous works in the exhibition. They will be joined by other well-known Texas artists that often explore creating art with found objects, including: Charles A. A. Dellschau, Forrest Bess, Felix “Fox” Harris, Jesse Lott, David McManaway, Maudee Carron, Clyde Connell, Bert Long, Mary McCleary, Dario Robleto, Vernon Fisher, Trenton Doyle Hancock and Jonathan Rosenstein. As guest curator, Robert Craig Bunch has selected each artist, considering the diversity and enigmatic visual history of the found object realm. They were included in Bunch’s book, The Art of Found Objects: Interviews with Texas Artists, published by Texas A&M University Press in 2016.”

Steve Brudniak: In the Wake of the Exodus
In conjunction with the Biennial Abilene Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition at The Ira M Taylor Art Gallery – Hardin Simmons University.
Brudniak will be showing new work and closely related work from the last decade in this, solo indoor exhibit in conjunction with the Biennial. The pieces in this exhibit are bound together by the murmur resonating from the dig into the rabbit hole to the unknown; the physical entrances into those rabbit holes: portals, mirrors, lenses and doors. What you see here is meant to take you out of the world to that state where there are no words, no thoughts.

At the Frost Center for Visual Arts 2200 Hickory, Abilene, TX 79698. The show runs from August 27 thru September 22, 2017. NOTE: the
CLOSING Reception is Friday September 21, 2017 5:00-6:30pm.

Brudniak included in Texas 12 at The Arts Center Texas Gallery and Wolf Pen Park, College Station, TX
Curated by Alison de Lima Greene, Curator of Contemporary and Modern Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Exhibit runs from April 20 – May 19 2016 With opening reception April 30th from 2:00 – 4:30 pm. A catalog of the show will be available.

New Brudniak coffee table book and print available now: The Science of Surrealism – Assemblage Sculpture of Steve Brudniak.
Guillermo Del Toro book preface excerpt:
“…Brudniak fabricates, manipulates or re-shapes found materials into absolutely
coherent, powerful works of art. He can cannibalize a junkyard, a discarded science
lab or even his own bodily fluids in order to find the perfect balance between drama
and aesthetics. Ask him to tell you the stories behind each piece and he will regale
you with tales that involve illegal medical experiments, miracle cures through art and paranormal experiences. …But, above all, the pieces themselves are the story.
Like museum artifacts, they speak of a future/past that is half Orwellian nightmare,
half Steampunk adventure. They tell long lost tales of expeditions, factories or mad
scientist labs in lands out of reach, out of time.”

The Science of Surrealism – Assemblage sculpture of Steve Brudniak is a thirty
year retrospective of work, inspiration and methods along with a display of work
dating from the early eighties up to his most recent sculpture. To order the book
visit brudniakbook.com. 100 copies of the book will be available with a limited
edition signed print.
