This was inspired by Matisse’s Bronze Back series sculptures. The small back was the remnant of a bronze cherub figurine, its front cut off and used in an older work from 1991 entitled, Heaven/Hell Censer. It can be removed from the case like a commemorative coin or medal. A coin with no currency, a medal for a lost cause. Sorrow encased.
